God this book was so good. If you love a fantasy- with a sub plot of romance, deadly trials, prophecies, slow burn, found family book where the FMC is the shadow wielding immortal fae and the MMC is the powerless human knight then you will love Smoke and Scars. .
Elyria and Cedrics banter and chemistry is so well written I was eating it up every time they were interacting. There was even a “Who did this to you?” moment that had me giggling and kicking my feet.
Elyria is a very complex character. Her struggles with dealing with grief and feeling the burdens of everything she has gone through in her life, were written so beautifully and watching her slowly grow and not feel so burdened by everything was incredibly emotional.
Cedric is a broody human knight who starts off with some prejudices against fae and our FMC Elyria. His character development throughout the book was so well written I thoroughly enjoyed. Ric is definitely a Chaol coded character.
I devoured this book in one day. The emotional journey that this book put me through was beautiful and sad all in one.
That ending?! I honestly was not expecting that at all, I normally can pick what the plot twist will be in a book and lets just say I was pleasantly surprised.
I have been so blessed to receive an ARC copy of book 2 “Splintered Kingdom” and after the ending of Smoke and Scar… I am so glad I don’t have to wait for book 2
