The Giver by Lois Lowry

5.0

Whoa.

This book simultaneously bends the rules of literature while entertaining and keeping interest. Granted, it's not the longest book ever, but most books don't wait until like the next-to-the-last chapter to introduce the main conflict. Somehow, she did it. And I loved it.

The book has such a good mix of the modern voice and the classic voice. The blends intricate explanation into lines of dialogue and weaves the story so perfectly.

The length of the book seems to point to it beginning as a short story, then blossoming into something more, especially since conflict is introduced so late in the book.

Lowry ends the book in about a paragraph of conclusion, and somehow doesn't make anything feel rushed. It's just so lovely. I don't know how she does it.

I'm excited to read the next book in the series. We'll see if it's as awesome as this one was!
