The dialogue of the black characters versus the white characters is a little distasteful. Even if a black character had more education and class than many of the white characters, they were still made to talk like uneducated idiots.
Even though the main character is self educated and only ever lived in the swamp
she talks more "refined." Just put a bad taste in my mouth. Also don't know how to feel about a white author using the "n-word." It felt unnecessary to the story. The time jumps from past to present also add nothing and just make the story drag on.
