A Wizard of Earthsea by Ursula K. Le Guin

5.0

It’s a really, really interesting book. Not much to say, it’s just overall a fantastic read.

It feels very episodic and light, but there’s always that constant tension between Ged and his shadow. The ending was really obvious in hindsight, but I was always wondering how Ged was going to defeat the shadow. It really picks up in the end, though, with them sailing into the darkness, that scene was really good.

The worldbuilding is excellent. I like how the Kargs reappear under a totally different context. But, the Osskill portions were slightly less interesting than the rest. Ged is the standout character, but I also liked Vetch a lot accompanying him throughout the story. There’s not many characters beyond that, but it shows Ged and Vetch’s bond very well.
