Dr. Franklin's Island by Ann Halam
3.0
I watched a tiktok where a woman was taking through the books that shaped her as a reader that she read over and over as a child. Our tastes lined up exactly and I had read every book she had, except this one.
When describing it I immediately saw the inspiration of the book as the Island of Dr Moreau by H. G. Wells which I LOVE and have read other adaptations of, so I knew I had to read this one too.
It’s not a perfect book, and is pretty graphic and violent for a kids chapter book, but I would have loved it as a kid. I grew up reading and loving Robinson Crusoe and the Swiss Family Robinson, so this would have been right up my alley.
