Burnt Offerings by Laurell K. Hamilton

4.0

The seventh book in the Anita Blake, Vampire Hunter series, and it’s another scintillating adventure from our fearless heroine.

This instalment ups the danger levels once again, but also finally introduces Asher, who is visiting with the Vampire council. As Jean-Claude’s ex lover from his triumvirate with Julianna, it brings in some great emotional baggage with the dangerous element of the vengeance he is wanting to grind.

I was super excited to see Asher make his appearance, as this brings out more of Jean-Claude’s past, and you also get to see an emotional connection by Jean-Claude with someone other than Anita. It also brings up an interesting element with Anita’s reaction to Asher and how she responds to him throughout the visit, and how that impacts on Asher and his plan for revenge for Julianna’s death and his own maiming.

The deadly Vampire council is in town, and looking for any excuse to remove Jean-Claude from power and to take the dangerous and perplexing Executioner with him. Anita continues to buck the system and thwart the plans of the council.

Tied into the story is an interesting arson case with the police, that keeps the action humming and the danger levels at a peak.

With lots of vampire politics and life or death situations, plenty of angst between Richard, Anita and Jean-Claude with the emotional shifts in the balance of the triumvirate, this chapter in the Anita Blake series is another fast-paced great read that is hard to put down.
