I am..truly just wow.
I have never heard of the Dozier School for Boys. I saw the raving reviews about this book and wanted to give it a try. I thought the book being more than 300 pages would be a barrier for me but when I tell you that it hurt to put this book down. Mrs. Due, you absolutely did your mf thing. I felt every chapter in my body and spirit. I cannot imagine the grief and healing that came from this process of research, discovery, reflection, and writing.
I found myself tearing up at certain points, disgusted, angry, and warm.
I absolutely plan on reading non-fiction pieces about the school, but the exposure I got from this work of historical and literary fiction has me so moved and shaken.
I plan on doing a much more thorough review on my IG (@readingbeanjayleen), but I am just overwhelmed (in a good way) by the flow of this story. My heart goes out to the families impacted by this evil institution and to the boys who never made it home. May they be at peace with so many people learning more and more about their stories.
