Counting the Cost by Jill Duggar
5.0
This is the Duggar book I have been waiting for. When Jinger’s book came out earlier this year, I had high hopes. But if you read her book, or my review, you know it was more about specific religious principles and practices, than about the family.
Jill’s book, on the other hand, is really all about their family, what it was like to grow up as a Duggar and in the spotlight on television, and her conflict with her parents over control and money, as well as some of their religious beliefs. I know the Prime documentary gets into this a bit, but Jill goes even further here – writing about her disagreements with her father, how her brother, Josh’s, issues affected her throughout the years, how she really felt about having her wedding and the birth of her first child being filmed for the entire world to see - and not being paid for any of it - and her decision to pull back from both the tv series as well as the strict religious community in which she was raised.
I struggled giving this book a rating because I’ve heard that Jill and Derick still do have beliefs that I don’t agree with and are actually harmful to other people. However, I have given it five stars here (I didn't rate it on Instagram) because I really couldn't put it down and read it in one day.
If you are curious about the Duggar family and what went on behind the closed doors of the reality show, I definitely recommend picking up this book.
