The Murmur of Bees
by Sofía Segovia
This book is one of the most beautifully written books I’ve read. Sofía Segovia has a way of making you feel every emotion very deeply and immensely. I read the book in Spanish because I wanted to immerse myself more deeply in the history of Mexico. I loved the humor she used throughout her writing even as she’s writing about death and grief during the Spanish flu and other historical times in Mexico. The characters were very well developed and I fell in love with the family. I wept for about half the book because I was so invested in the characters.
While I loved the book after I finished it, I found it very slow and hard to go back to it at times. The plot was slowly developed and there were a few side stories that maybe the book could have done without. I also wish that the rivalry between some of the characters would have been more of a focus. It would have made the story that much more engaging.
All in all, it’s a great story about the love between a family regardless of the obstacles they face.
