A Painted House
by John Grisham
Quite a departure from his usual writing topic & style. This was a very good book, set in the sleepy cotton country of Arkansas. The story told by 7 year old Luke Chandler, becomes his book of family & town secrets so to speak. Luke will get a lickin if he divulges any of the secrets he knows, so he holds them in, even if it costs him a few nights' sleep. He dreads picking cotton & dreams of a career on the Cardinal's baseball team. A wonderfully written story. 4 stars.
