Daughter of the Deep by Rick Riordan

Did not finish book. Stopped at 18%.
My 10 y/o and I love reading Rick Riordan's books out loud, so we were looking forward to this series. The characters are fun and interesting, but neither of us liked the amount of guns, and kids with guns, at the school. Clearly it's a fantasy school and a dangerous one, but the gun violence feels a lot different than the fantasy violence of the Percy Jackson books. We want to read these books because they are fantasy, but kids casually walking around with AK-47s in school settings and threatening to shoot other kids with SIG Sauers isn't fantasy, it's scary. Working to avoid thinking about school shootings while reading a Riordan series wasn't what we expected.

We talked about how intense the guns seemed in the opening chapters of the book and decided to give it a few more chapters. While we talk about gun violence as I'm sure every parent must, we really don't want to have to talk about it while we read before bed. We decided to put it aside as the guns became more guns, and then more guns!

This is probably for an older group, and a reader that som how isn't tired of reading about kids with guns at school.
