The Chimes by Charles Dickens

2.0

I'll have to admit that I struggled to follow the plot on this one up until the 4th chapter. There was so much going on and I couldn't keep the characters or intended plot straight. I'm usually not this dumb when it comes to that era's language and literary tropes, but this one for some reason mostly felt all over the place to me. That said, I did love the discourse Dickens slipped in about the unfair incarceration rate of the poor-man with the rousing "to jail" speech. I also did love the story from the moment that the main character recognizes what it is that he's being forced to learn. Such a chilling lesson on judge not. It was worth the confusion to get to that point alone.
