the writing in this is actually stunning. Annis’s story is heartbreaking and the portrayal of slavery is as raw and unflinching as it was in reality. i also love magical realism so i thought this story would be perfect. in many ways, it was great but in most ways it was good. 3/5 is still a book i enjoyed but i didn’t feel it was told at a decent pace and would’ve sometimes benefitted from more direct storytelling. can’t wait to read more Jesmyn Ward
