A Gathering of Shadows by V.E. Schwab
2.75
adventurous tense slow-paced
Loveable characters: Yes

I don’t feel like i read the same book as y’all and I am so deeply confused……

Positives:
- I wholeheartedly do love these characters and their dynamics with each other and they are the only reason I finished this book. A part of me wanted to rate this 3⭐️ for how much I love them, but I disliked so much more I couldn’t overlook it.
- I need to see more of Alucard & Rhy & Lila & Kell

Negatives:
- the first 300 pages could have easily been cut down to maybe 100 pages, it felt almost completely redundant. Literally nothing happened apart from introducing Alucard into the mix & yapping about this competition that then the competition only being like maybe 50-100 pages in this book?? Basically, the pacing was a mess.
- the plot? Also felt so random?? And this is a controversial statement, but Lila joining the competition felt out of character to me. This first book establishes her as this roguish thieving individualistic/kinda selfish morally grey character, & i get the whole wanting to prove herself thing to a point, but when you really think about it, literally what is in for her?? I don’t really get why Kell was in the competition either tbh.
- the magic system felt super disjointed from the first book to this one to me as well, and I was quite confused by it?

I am so flabbergasted by how much I truly did not like this book. I love V. E. Schwab, & literally all of my friends and mutuals have rated this book 5-4⭐️ for the most part, & for many it’s their favourite book/fantasy trilogy & I am…. Lost

Book one felt like a really good set up to this world & these characters, and this book just felt so off to me. I’m so torn on if I even want to finish this trilogy at all. I really do love the characters and want to know how their story ends, but I know the third book is even longer & many say this one is the best of the three…. Idk if I can do it y’all…. We shall see
