Burnt Offerings by Laurell K. Hamilton

Asher!

*calms down*

I honestly thought that he didn't appear for another book but am quite glad I am wrong as he was always one of my favourite characters when I first read this series.

As well as properly introducing one of my favourite characters this book introduces us to the wereleopards (though still more of a passing mention than a major plot at this point) and to some of the vampire council representatives.

Hamiltons books are in classed as 'adult' so she is easily able to show us exactly why the vampire council is to be feared as opposed to simply telling us we ought to be scared
though a rotting necrophiliac vampire is more freaky and disturbing than scary but it still adds up to something you want to get far far away from
. I don't recall the council members having any major roles in later books, though I am hoping either I am remembering wrong or they appear after Blood Noir which is the last I own in the series so far.

Although Anita is still our lead the books are definitely becoming more of an ensemble peice - we have a number of werewolves known by name, an equal amount of vampires, some random humans (no offence to Larry or Ronnie), some members of the police force, a couple of wereleopards and rats and now some vampire council members. It means that Hamilton has to make some hard decisions as to who is going to feature and why - but at times I do also wonder where so and so has gotten too. On the whole though, these books are so fast paced (thanks to the events taking place over a very small period of time) that it isn't until I have finished the book I start to wonder about the secondary people.

There also isn't quite as much sex as I recall - I know it really picks up at one point
thanks to the ardeur
but I thought once Anita had picked a guy it picked up from there. In a way I am glad because it was the overkill on sex that turned me off the series originally - I'm hoping that I just forgot plot points that make the sex make sense - still that is at leat five books in the future yet!
