After being recommended this book based on its supposed social and political commentary, I was underwhelmed. The ideas are there but quite surface level and there are so many ways that political and social commentary could have been developed. Although, at least from my perspective, the discussion around gender and women's roles in the book are worth talking about. I think if I went into with only the expectation that it is a disturbing horror, I don't think I would have been as disappointed.
