Makes a number of profound points and a strong case for defending the enlightenment ideals that have defined the west post-WW2. Unfortunately, Steven does overstate his case on many issues, and he speaks with the same certainty about his unsubstantiated opinions as on his strongly supported facts, but the scope of the work is broad enough that this may be justified (see his discussions on philosophy and religion vs. his much stronger treatment of individual issues). Overall, he succeeds in making his case that the achievements of modern society are worth defending.
