Excellent book with an interesting take on magic

Characters
I found the characters really loveable and relatable, with very clever backstories and experiences played on expertly and explored well.
Kell was a perfectly written, relatable protagonist, Lila an amazing, kick-arse lead, and their relationship was wonderful and totally believable.

Setting
This setting is rich, wonderful, and beautifully imagined, the rules of the magic in it carefully thought out and followed, the culture and history of each world excellently explored

Plot
The plot is a carefully crafted thing here, hooking from the start. The characters engaged with it really well, on their own separate and believable way.
The only criticism I could give would be that it would have been nice if the plot could slow down or speed up a bit; it felt a little on-the-fence about how invasive to be, but that might just be me

Overall, a very clever and engaging fantasy with compelling characters and a wonderful setting
