3.5

When our main character Alex, a retired solider, is summoned to their childhood friends home for an emergency they immediately take their things and go. When they arrive what they find is things are darker than they seem. Fungal growths have taken over the wildlife, animals are acting strange, and voices can be heard at night when everyone is sleeping. Their friend has a strange malady of the nerves and seems to be deteriorating before their eyes. Alex must figure out what is consuming the Usher estate before it takes over them all.

I must say, the atmosphere of this book was top notch. I could feel the fungal growths around me as I read. I could hear the voices in my head. But unfortunately I just didn’t connect with the main character. For a book this size, an immediate connection is needed for me. At just over 200 pages I found myself slowly getting through it. Overall, it’s a 3.5✨ read for me but don’t take my word for it - I can think of 5 other friends who 5/5 loved it.

Thank you @bookhookedheather for sending me this for our spooky book exchange hosted by @literary_lizard !! I’m obsessed with the cover 😍!
