Know Your Newlywed by Hillary Nussbaum, Heather Taylor

3.75

Boston-based Cleo and Chicago-based Javi connect on a dating app over their mutual love and nostalgia for an old game show called Know Your Newlywed (like The Newlywed Game).

Cleo had opened the dating app on a whim while still at the airport in Chicago, never expecting any matches there to amount to anything, but she and Javi keep chatting even when she’s settled back in Boston.

When the two hear that there’s a reboot scheduled for Know Your Newlywed, they apply together. When else will they ever get the chance to go on their favorite show? Sure, they’re not married—or even really dating—but they figure they can study up and go on for the experience.

Now in the same city for the show, it turns out their banter over the phone was a precursor to real chemistry in-person, and the the two quickly become fan favorites. Will this blossom into love and a real relationship for them?

At a glance:
  • Dual POV
  • Novella length with full story arc
  • Long distance
  • Fake marriage
  • Each with their own ambitions
  • FMC in STEM
  • Lovable supporting cast of characters
  • Closed door
  • Full cast narration
  • Sound effects

I adore when audiobooks are set up like old-fashioned radio shows. This one comes complete with a full cast and sound effects. Tyler Posey and Mary Mouser do a great job of bringing Javi and Cleo to life. The production on the audiobook kept me engaged in the story.

This would be good for fans of Cara Bastone’s audiobook novellas, like Seatmate and Love at First Psych.

I received an advance copy of the audiobook from Simon and Schuster Audio. All review opinions are my own.
