Dead Ever After
by Charlaine Harris
Okay, I know a lot of people are super pissy about the fact Sookie didn't end up with Eric- and you're more than welcome to your opinion- but the major hissy fits I've seen lately are quite unbecoming. That said, I loved this final installment of a series that has captivated my imagination for years, and to me, it was a fitting ending. Sookie has maintained all along that she wanted to have a family and enjoy her life, and that she did not want to be a vampire. Her love for Sam, while I felt it could have been developed a little more, even made sense- she's been unnaturally jealous of his girlfriends for a whole slew of books now, and I'm sorry, but anyone who didn't see it coming is either blind or in denial. By remaining with Sam, Sookie stayed true to herself and her wishes, which is something I commend Charlaine Harris for doing, even despite all of the backlash. It's nice to have a female protagonist who doesn't bend her will and self worth into what her man wants her to be- and Eric fully admits that he wanted to turn her, even against her will. Excuse me?
I'm not going to get into all the ways I thought Eric/Sookie was wrong, but I will say this: the ending of their relationship made sense to me. He was the wild, dark, broody bad boy that all girls seem to have at least once or twice before settling down, and he played his part admirably. It was nice to see Sookie grow up, and while I'm sad that this is the final book in the series, I'm very happy with the resolution. Thank you, Charlaine Harris, for a completely entertaining world to look forward to over the past few years, and I look forward to your future endeavors.
