Three things to know about me: I haven't vibed with anything by V. E. Schwab except for the Villains series. I'm not a fan of vampires and only ever enjoyed them in BTVS/ATS. I don't read romance.
And yet.
And yet, this book and its characters lived rent free in my mind throughout my reading. I suspect they will keep doing that for quite some time, even now that I'm supposed to leave them behind and start another story. And although this wasn't as life changing as Villains, it shares something precious with it: the deep conviction I'll never find the proper words to review them, to explain why there's technically nothing very special or different to these stories and yet... And yet. V. E. Schwab is at her best when she writes about desperate, hurting, twisted people. Those made for the midnight soil.
Highly recommended.
