I have mixed feelings about this story. The writing is good - JLM knows how to hook her readers and develop interesting characters. But, the pacing felt slow. I think it had to do with everything being told from Lis’ POV. She doesn’t know what’s going on in the world around her so, the plot moves along when she discovers something. Normally, this wouldn’t slow the plot down, except Lis doesn’t do much in the book, so it takes longer for new plot points to be discovered. We also learn a lot about the world Lis lives in through the conversations she has with people in the manor. There were times where I would skim these conversations because I became bored with them.

When the story ended on a cliffhanger, I didn’t feel devastated or desperate for the next book. So, I give this book 3 stars - it was good, but I probably won’t read it again & I don’t know if I’m invested enough in the characters to read the next book.
