The Disordered Cosmos: A Journey Into Dark Matter, Spacetime, and Dreams Deferred
by Chanda Prescod-Weinstein
informative
reflective
medium-paced
I'm finding it hard to describe how much I loved this book. The topics Chanda Prescod-Weinstein covers range from the gritty details of particle physics to the ways in which white supremacy and totalitarianism dictate whose voices, methods, and ideas are valued in our understanding of the universe. She also articulates her vision for liberation and what Black queer feminism can teach us about how science should progress, which she describes as a "practice that is as easy and big as asking: what are the conditions that our communities need to see the Milky Way?" Even as someone not involved in STEM, this book added to my own understanding of the work that needs to be done for everyone to be free.
I gotta admit that a lot of the discussion on quantum physics and dark matter and the bending of spacetime flew over my head. But I still found those chapters to be accessible and fascinating. I've always struggled with math but love learning about how our universe works, and this is the first book on these topics that hasn't left me discouraged but instead made me want to learn more! I would highly recommend this to anyone in the same boat.
5/5, 10/10, I will be coming back to this often.
