The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn
by Mark Twain
Lately, I have thoroughly enjoyed reading well known classics such as Jane Eyre, A Tree Grows in Brooklyn, Grapes of Wrath, and more. I was enjoying them all so much that I decided to read The Adventures of Tom Sawyer and also The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn. This one, The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, was a difficult book to get through. I was appalled and saddened by the number of times the N word was used. I found it very offensive.
I don’t care if that word was more socially acceptable during Mark Twain’s era, we are now living in the 21st century- a time when it is NOT socially acceptable. It is appalling to me to read and even comprehend that it was ever acceptable. I am so sorry there is a time in history when people- wonderful, human beings- were treated with such disrespect. Shameful.
