The Wind in the Willows
by Kenneth Grahame
adventurous
emotional
funny
lighthearted
fast-paced
In the course of The Wind in the Willows, Kenneth Grahame presented me with some of the greatest, most hilarious sentences I have ever had the opportunity to read. The complete unpredictability of his quaint, cozy little English community of animals makes for a perfect paradise of character comedy. As childhood fantasies or satires of manners go, it does not get any better than this.
Naturally, Mr. Toad and his inexhaustible eccentricities charge the story's comic engine. But the characterizations of Mole, Rat, and Badger don't just provide a contrast with Toad's manic energy: the chapters focusing solely on their adventures are endearing enough to stand alone.
