Shanghai Girls by Lisa See

One of those books I just wanted to like more than I actually did. This tale traces the lives of two Chinese sisters from their carefree youth as "Beautiful Girls" in Shanghai just before the Japanese invaded to their arranged marriages which they try to avoid to their escape to from the country to the United States to meet the husbands to their lives as they unfold in the United States. One can learn a lot about the history of Chinese in the mid-twentieth century in the U.S. from the tale. It's also about family and sister relationships and keeping secrets.

I don't know what it was, however, but it never set right. Perhaps it's because the language seemed to modern, too casual from the tale. I don't know. It's worth a read but I wouldn't put it in the "i loved it" category.

Funniest aspect of the book. "The husband wife thing" is the euphamism for, well, you figure it out. :)
