Jude the Obscure by Thomas Hardy
5.0
13 May 2013 - Second time through. Just as good.
--------------------------------------------------
Hardy or Dickens? So hard to say. Such different flavors. Hardy does despair and futility like nobody else. When Dickens shows suffering, it's always pitiable; suffering in Hardy is always closer to self-pity. Dickens always offsets sorrow with joy and despair with hope. Hardy seems always to play the same tune with variations, but I haven't tired of it yet.
