You Like It Darker by Stephen King
4.0

I truly believe that this collection of short stories (minus “Rattlesnakes”, as it is a continuation of King’s “Cujo”) is the perfect intro into Stephen King’s writing. I am a huge fan of Stephen King and know him for his horror stories— which I also tend to favor in terms of genres I prefer— and was initially let down by the lack of horror aspects in a lot of these stories.

However, I pursued this book with a book club, and talking it over with others really changed my perspective on the stories. They’re less about shock value horror, and more about how horror can manifest in the most basic or mundane human activity and settings. For those who think they have an idea of Stephen King’s writing, this is a must-read… I changed my opinion looking back once I was able to detach from the tropes and stereotypes I expected going into this.

“Two Talented Bastids” and “Willie the Weirdo” were definitely my favorites of the collection, but overall this book offers a diverse range of stories that are equally enjoyable. Also, I 100% recommend reading these with a book club.
