This is such a beautiful novel. It’s about a missionary who is sent to an alien planet to spread the word of God, but it’s not a preachy sort of novel. I enjoy books that explore the idea of religion, but I don’t like ones that tell me explicitly what to think, and this one leaves you to make up your own mind. It reminded me of the part in Philip Pullman’s The Amber Spyglass where Dr Malone encounters the Mulefa and has to learn their language. It’s really about human connection and Faber does this by creating absences of connection, and rebuilding them in the least likely places. I think that’s what makes this book so compelling.
