Project Hail Mary by Andy Weir

I wasn’t expecting this book to inspire me to feel such an appreciation for science. I think when you become a grown up with a non-science career you forget the fun of experimenting, discovering and learning science. This book immerses you in that fun.
I also wasn’t expecting this book to have an alien or feature the relationship with that alien. I don’t want to spoil much but i grew to care for the alien much more than I thought I would. I listened to this book in the car with Nate and I joked that i would’ve never met the alien in the first place if I was Grace. He loves sci if and astronomy so it was cool to hear him accurately predict what would happen and explain to me more about the science. The book was satisfying to both a science nerd and someone who hated honors chemistry.

I think I was expecting to read about an astronaut who saves the universe. I don’t normally read sci if, I didn’t like science much in school so I was nervous about this book. But I enjoyed this book! I liked how instead, the book focuses on his growth as a man, his unlikely friendship, and how he becomes unselfish and willing to make a necessary sacrifice.

I’d never read a book with such a humorous and relatable tone of voice. It was like conversing with a friend! I admire how the author mastered Grace’s voice and how that snarky tone kept the book readable.

I think I’d recommend this book to teenagers who think they don’t like science or don’t know how cool science can be.
