The Alpha and His King by Kiki Clark

4.0

Kind of douchey overbearing alpha falls for half-shifter with trust issues.

OK here’s the deal: if I find a book about werewolves, I’m probably gonna like it, but if you add in Kirt Graves reading about the werewolves? Jesus fucking Christ go ahead and just buy me the whole series because I’m guaranteed to hang on every word. It’s like a Pavlovian response at this point (candy canes and pinecones and epic and awesome ringing any bells?) Absolutely 5/5 stars for narration.

As for the book, I liked it enough to definitely read (listen to) the whole series. I appreciated the world building and the fact that you hit the ground running right at the beginning of chapter 1. And while there were only a couple spicy scenes, they were well written.

That being said the alpha MC was honestly a bit of a douchebag - in the way a lot of alpha MCs are written but without the redeeming qualities to make the reader overlook his assholery. He was way too fucking overbearing - did not like.

My other big complaint was the fact that all the shady characters were introduced and described as shady, and then when they ended up being revealed as the antagonists, everyone was *shocked.*  I’d have appreciated a little bit more subtlety.

Overall it was an enjoyable read and I’ll happily continue listening to Kirt Graves talk about werewolf sex for the next 5 books.
