merichmer 's review for:
A Study in Scarlet
by Arthur Conan Doyle
I was not particularly impressed with this first outing of Sherlock Holmes. The mystery itself is good, but Doyle completely diverges in the midst of the action to give an elaborate backstory in the form of a Western. Very strange. Also, Mormons. I feel like the concept was probably pulled from popular fiction at the time. It just feels so out of place in a Sherlock Holmes story. Anyway, I just got the complete Sherlock Holmes series on my Kindle, so more reviews will be forthcoming.
