I feel like Moyes tried very hard to be like Jodi Picoult with this novel, but didn't succeed at all - and I am not even that big Picoult fan, but at least her stories usually have some strong emotional impact. With this one... nothing mattered, honestly. The modern day part of the story was especially bad, all about telling and not showing, without even trying to flesh out the characters. It didn't help that the third-person narrative with present tense felt really jarring and distant, at least in finnish.
