Ordeal by Innocence by Agatha Christie
5.0

A solid Christie mystery. No Poirot or Marple. This time one of the “sleuths ” is Arthur Calgary. Arthur is a geophysicist who returns from a lengthy time away to discover that he can provide an alibi for a man who unfortunately died in prison. Arthur goes to see this man’s family, thinking they will be thrilled to know that their loved one is innocent, but instead they are alarmed because now all in that household, know there is still a murderer living amongst them. Arthur sticks around and along with superintendent Huish( the original investigator) solves the crime. Along the way we get to know each member of this family. I gave this book 5 stars because I thought it was well paced, well written. Each person could’ve been the killer but the reader can also see how each person can be innocent. The title is perfect . as one of the characters says it’s not the guilty who matter it’s the innocent.

What I also appreciated about this book was at the beginning there was a list of the cast of characters so anytime I needed a refresher as to who someone was I could go to the front and read description. I wish more Christie novels had this feature.

This book was written in the 1950s . Christie keeps with “the times” of the roles of women and men. So when I’m giving my rating, I overlook a bit of that , she also has a tendency to finish her books up with a bit of surprise romance that often makes no sense. This book is no different. One can’t forget that Agatha also had a side career as a romance novelist.

If one wants a book that does not have one of the usual sleuths this is a good choice.
