The Ghost Bride by Yangsze Choo

So funny story. I won an ARC of this book back in 2013 and somehow the book was lost so I was never able to read it. I ended up finding a copy of it and was delighted to finally be able to read it.

Overall, I enjoy the book. The premise is rather interesting and not something I would typically have read before. The story manages to blend supernatural elements and horror, with a dreamlike element to it. The writing is very vivid and I loved exploring the afterlife of a different culture.

For me, the low point of this story is definitely the weak love subplot. I don’t believe Li Lan is in love with either men, I think she was just infatuated with them. The blatant foreshadowing in the beginning was also rather annoying for me. I didn’t need to know that Li Lan was going to regret certain choices or actions until it happened and it ruined the surprise of certain elements because I already knew to expect them. At times I was also pulled out of the story when the author would over explain certain details or include random sentences that dealt with side characters.

Overall a 3.5 star rating.
