The story is an interesting look into Confederate society but even taking it as a product of the time Margaret Mitchell's treatment of black characters is difficult to read. Overtly racist tones and language throughout, while painting a rather idealistic view of the institution of slavery. I appreciated Scarlett's tenacity but found her hard to like as she's about as selfish as they come.
