Alan Moore is perhaps best known for his critique of archetypes; usually he does this with superheroes as is the case in Watchmen, but here he takes well known literary characters and puts them in a rather dysfunctional super team.
I found myself much more amused by it this time round compared to when I read it as a teen. It is full of swashbuckling adventure, fairly low stakes, and many clever allusions to Victorian literature.
The artwork is stunning and the story unfolds gloriously. Sometimes, however, Moore seems very pleased with himself and is too focused on squeezing in esoteric references than moving the story along. There are also very clunky lines of dialogue which are only in there as a nod and a wink to the more literate readers.
