Shameless by Anne Stuart

I seemed to have been under the impression that this series was to be a trilogy, so I was surprised when I saw one of my friends had added this book to her to-read list. Surprised, and extremely happy, because I really liked the first three books in the series.

This book is no exception. I liked it as much--if not more--than the first three. Both the male and female leads were immensely likeable, vulnerable, yet tough, and intelligent. I felt myself rooting for their relationship right away. Both had strong reasons for not falling in love and/or marrying again, and it was very satisfying to watch all these walls being slowly broken down throughout the course of the book. The dialogue between the two was sharp and witty, and their romance was totally believable.

In the first three books, a secondary romance ran parallel to the first. I often found these secondary romances suffered due to the lack of page time they got. That wasn't the case with this book. There was no secondary romance, only the setting up of what I hope will be the next installment of the series.

If you like historical romances, especially darker than normal ones, then I highly recommend this series.
