"torn Lace" and Other Stories: An English Translation by Emilia Pardo Bazán

5.0

I had never heard of this author before, but am so glad that I picked this book up at a sale. Bazán's stories definitely reminded me of those of Maupassant (whose stories I'm also reading, on and off, in a little Dover book). My particular copy, it seems, came from a student, whose notes, alongside the editor's commentary before the stories, I also enjoyed reading as they popped up.

Many of the stories presented here deal with women, love, and weddings, which I found curious, but the way these different stories meander keeps reading about these themes interesting. My favorite story was "First Love," which was the first take in this book, and I enjoyed it because it was short, sentimental, and poignantly funny.

All in all, I'd like to read more of Pardo Bazán's stories in the future, and I'm so grateful for the way these stories were presented in this MLA Texts and Translations series that I've ordered a few other titles right away - something I've never done before, but I like discovering foreign authors, and I feel this series can help with that.
