Homegoing by Yaa Gyasi

5.0

I never understood having a favorite book until “Homegoing” by Yaa Gyasi. It was the first adult book that I remember making a true, lasting impression.

Homegoing tells the story of two sisters - one sold into slavery and the other marries a white and leads a life of comfort - and their descendants.

The writing is lovely. The storytelling is engaging, captivating and thought-provoking. The complete loss of a family history is heartbreaking. Every character and chapter evoke compassion and empathy.

I’ve read lots of books about it relating to slavery but Homegoing stuck with me like no others. I’ve read it over and over, and recommend to others any chance I get.

If you haven’t read it, put it on your list!
