Vincent by Barbara Stok

4.0

I don’t know much about Van Gogh except he was prone to fits of emotional/mental crises which saw him cut off part of his ear and shoot himself. This GN could have easily just focused on these parts of his life but Stok paints a wonderful homage to Van Gogh and documents his time in Arles (in the south of France) where his dreams to become a renowned and celebrated artist is always at the forefront of his mind.

We see the beautiful (but sometimes strained) relationship Vincent had with his younger brother, Theo, an art dealer who offers his unconditional love and support (both emotional and financial) who wanted the best for Vincent but knew of his sensitive, passionate and sometimes volatile disposition but would do whatever it took to ensure Vincent was as happy as possible.

We see Vincent’s breakdown and time spent in a hospital which are some very sad and low points to the story but also his success with his sunflowers painting, and his vision of creating an artists’ house for himself and his artist friends (Gaugin). All I can say was that Vincent was an incredibly intense personality whose need to achieve and succeed in art possibly drove him to despair but Stok has captured his essence perfectly in this short GN and I would thoroughly recommend to all.

The illustrations in this were incredible and vividly captured Van Gogh as a tortured soul. Powerful stuff!
