This is a stand-alone book, but if you've read Rowell's previous book Fangirl you'll know some of the plot beforehand. If not, you might be a bit shocked.
That said, this is loosely a Harry Potter knock-off, with a magical school, a friendly goatkeeper (the Hagrid role), and the Humdrum (Lord Voldemort). It also features vampires. The first 200 pages drag a little as the story is being set up, but the last 300 fly and I loved them. 3 stars for the beginning and 5 for the end.

Reread in preparation for Wayward Son and it was better than I remembered, didn’t seem to drag at all. I can’t wait for a whole book of Simon and Baz together!
