The Secret Life of Bees by Sue Monk Kidd
4.0
“Everyone needs a God who looks like them, Lily.”
I enjoyed this book a lot. I actually always enjoy books narrated by young characters. There’s something about the voice of a young character that just grips you right by your heart.
The story is about Lily, a 14 year old girl who accidentally killed her mother when she was 4 (not a spoiler.) It didn’t help that she was stuck with an unloving and cruel father.
I’m currently seeing a drama about a man who’s still struggling with the fact that he was abandoned by his mother as a kid. He’s successful and everything but the hole is still there. I think losing a mother isn’t something anyone can heal from. Lily kept searching for answers, anything to let her know who her mother was, what really happened that night she died but was she prepared for the truth?
Asides Lily, the story is also about the Calendar Sisters, August, May and June. They were beekeepers who offered Lily a home, who helped her unravel the mystery surrounding her mother and equipped her with lessons about life and about bees.
I love the writing, it’s so beautiful.
