“The Inside Story” is another funny, clever addition to Michael Buckley’s “The Sisters Grimm Series.”

This was one of my favourite middle grade series growing up and I’m so excited to revisit it as an adult to see how it holds up. The book is just as whimsical as I remembered, taking the classic fairytales and turning them on their heads.

In “The Sisters Grimm,” Sabrina and Daphne have found themselves living in a world with Everafters—fairy tales come to life. In book eight of the series, the sisters find themselves inside the fairy tales! Along with their constant companion Puck, the girls race through famous stories from “The Wizard of Oz” to “Arabian Nights” to stop the Master from irrevocably changing history.

In his acknowledgements, Buckley mentioned this was the most challenging book to write of the series and I can see why. A lot of research was done on the different versions of the stories and trying to incorporate those into the story. Buckley pulled it off and had his characters steamrolling through the other stories with their trademark quips, and occasional reluctance for heroics.

He also gave Sabrina a great arc about the doubt she faced, after everything came crashing down around her in the previous book. It was handled well and provided her some more character growth. It will be interesting to see if it comes up again in the next book in the series.
