White Tears/Brown Scars: How White Feminism Betrays Women of Color by Ruby Hamad

5.0

Phenomenal! I listened to the audiobook of this, but I already know I am getting a physical copy as well. This book explains how white women weaponize the tears of The Damsel in Distress, and how it impacts brown and black women by gaslighting them, villainizing them, turning the conversation away from the topic at hand, and even by resulting in the brown/black woman losing her job or being ostracized. This should be read by every white women who has ever called herself a feminist. According to Hamad, there is and cannot be a sisterhood until we reckon with our history as the white oppressors and the female version of white supremacy. The book also explains how a lot of stereotypes came to be, and their connections to history, such as Princess Pocahontas, the Lewd Jezebel, the Dragon Ladies, the Exotic Orientals, etc, which was very enlightening to me. I highly recommend reading this!
