Listened to this on the audiobook. Overall felt like it was kind of annoying and rather unbelievable and to me, a good book has to be believable.

Plot is basically about a girl who slowly discovers that her life is very interconnected with a crime syndicate and she is on a mission to rid the community of it.

As an indigenous written book, I have to say I appreciate all the various details on the culture being brought into it. The funeral, the things they observe during mourning, the words they use to greet each other, the calls for help during emergency, the way the community works with the government/corporations, etc.

I like that the main char, Daunis, is treading between two worlds and the way the author writes about how she doesn’t feel she really belongs to either really describes such an isolating experience for her so well and makes her connection with her best friend so much more understandable.
Which really makes the murder and her feeling towards it and her motivations for helping to solve it all the more reasonable. But there’s a few things that I found really annoying.

Stupid things:
Okay first of all, she’s a kid basically, barely of age and the guy is 22?! Like he is already sent on an undercover mission at 22?? Erm I don’t think that’s very advisable because he is probably not very well trained and I’m not sure if any law enforcement would do something like that.

The way her uncle died. Like can you honestly tell me that a man who have studied and taught science his whole life would accidentally overdose to try the drug? And then they didn’t really say anything about this after.

The rape - felt so unnecessary like 100% don’t really understand why it was in there. It could just be harassment. I really hate sex crimes written without need because it’s so traumatic to read. And the way Daunis reacts afterwards? Like it felt like it happened and then was placed on the back burner. A lot of times, rape is a very very life altering event. It’s so traumatic and yet it’s being used as a plot device? Hate that. I mean she can react like she is trying to forget it but it seemed like she miraculously kind of got over it?

The judge and all the adults behind it. Erm it didn’t feel like they olayed a very big role. It felt like Mike was the one who literally orchestrated the whole thing. It’s not very clear what the adults were doing in the drug selling business.

Jamie and her falling in love was okay find they were cute so I guess this is where the stupid things end. Or I just cannot recall anymore. Overall, loved the indigenous themes and reading a story in that community but hated a lot of other things so I guess it evens out. Might have been a lower rating if I wasn’t listening on audiobook tbh.
