Tweet Cute
by Emma Lord
I had “Tweet cute” on my tbr for a lot of time, and I finally read it last week. WHAT. WAS. I. THINKING. Seriously, why did I ignore this for so long? I had such a great time reading it!
Let’s start with the characters: Pepper and Jack. While both of them attend the same private school in NYC, they couldn’t be any more different. Pepper is an overachiever. Although, to be honest, she's more of a lonely girl who's thrown herself into school and sports to create a way too full timetable and keep her mother -and her fears about the future- at bay. Jack, on the other hand, is more of a joker and often feels he lives in the shadow of his twin, golden boy, diving team captain and student president Ethan. I enjoyed how they slowly go from being kind of frenemies and classmates to friends and partners. Also, I loved how Emma Lord set their interactions in two different types of social media: Twitter and Weazel, an app where students from Stone Hall chat anonymously.
We can’t skip the tweets: those were hilarious, I would love to see that happen for real (or maybe not, because I don’t think fast-food chains attacking small businesses would go that well). And the BAKING, I love baking, so Pepper and her sister’s creations won me (I definitely am NOT thinking on trying any of those recipes, at all).
The pace was good also, although there were a few things I didn’t get. Like, what’s wrong with Pepper’s sister, Paige? The little information we got didn’t quite explain such anger towards her whole family. The thing with the parents… Well, I won’t go into much detail to avoid possible spoilers (I know, spoilers? Everyone has already read this), but most of their actions were just WRONG. Someone get counseling for that people, especially for Pepper’s mum.
Also, have I already said I love memes? That was probably one of the things I liked the most about “Tweet cute”, it used such a lighthearted humor and made reading very enjoyable. And the word puns? ‘Cheesy romance’, ‘tweet cute’? Emma Lord has my heart and a place in my bookshelf, forever.
