The Grapes of Wrath
by John Steinbeck
This is a heavy book. Not just because of the sheer number of pages, but more predominantly because of its subject matter. You start off thinking the Joads are just a sorry bunch, but as the story progresses, you can't help but be there right along with them. The suffering and hardship are hard to imagine when reading this book from the comfort of your home, all the more because it is so visceral. To drive the point home even further are the chapter stuck between the actual story chapters which sometimes approach something of a poetry. Relaying more history than story, they deepen and widen the context of the Joad odyssey. This makes for a long and harrowing story with ultimately no satisfying end, leaving one with a bitter feeling. For anyone looking for an account of what live was like during the Depression in America, this should be one's first stop.
