Big Summer by Jennifer Weiner

4.0

This was my first book by Jennifer Weiner and I will definitely be back for more!

Daphne and Drue were high school friends (well, sort of) but after a major falling out, haven’t spoken in over a decade. Then beautiful, seems-to-have-it-all Drue walks back into Daphne’s now thriving life and asks her to be the maid of honor at her wedding. Daphne is skeptical to say the least but she agrees (or else we don’t have a story now do we?).

I’m not going to share much more than that because there is joy to be had in going into this book blind. I will say that what starts as rom-com evolves into a mystery and I was drawn in by all of it.

The book addresses weight stigma, female friendships, toxic relationships and more. I liked reading about a main character who wasn’t a perfect size 6 and is still a woman who has come into her own, albeit with insecurities and foibles. I thought Weiner did a good job of melding a romance and mystery together though the book maybe could’ve woven the two together a little earlier in the story.

Overall, this is an excellent beach read. Light and fun but not without substance.
